David Berg Named President and Chief Executive Officer of Northern California Presbyterian Homes and Services

David_Berg_300dpi(SAN FRANCISCO) — Northern California Presbyterian Homes and Services (NCPHS) recently announced that its Board of Directors has appointed David Berg, MBA as its next President and Chief Executive Officer. Currently the Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of NCPHS, Berg will assume his new role on October 1, 2014.

“David brings knowledge of complex multi-campus organizations, first-hand experience in growth and development, and excellent strategic skills,” said Oliver Wesson, Chair of the NCPHS Board of Directors. “He has developed a reputation at NCPHS as a strong communicator with board members, residents, staff, and community stakeholders. And most importantly, he has demonstrated a deep commitment to the mission of NCPHS.”

“Few organizations have as clear a sense of purpose as NCPHS,” Berg said. “Everyone is dedicated to enriching the experience of aging for the diverse residents and clients we serve. It is a great privilege to serve with our staff and lead them to ever higher levels of performance.”

Berg has over 30 years of experience in operations, strategy, and business development for hospitals, affordable housing developers, senior living companies, and community service organizations. Since 2008, Berg has served on the NCPHS management team as Vice President of Business Development of NCP Senior Ventures, Vice President of Operations, and most recently as the Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. Prior to his tenure at NCPHS, Berg worked as a management consultant for 11 years, and was an executive at Catholic Healthcare West (currently Dignity Health) for 19 years. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Rochester and an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Berg will succeed Barbara Hood, who is retiring at the end of December 2014 after 14 years as NCPHS President and CEO. Until December, Hood will focus on special projects for NCPHS.

2015 Annual Conference Call for Proposals: Deadline July 31

The 2015 Annual Conference is built around LeadingAge California’s Strategic initiatives of developing “out of the box” innovative programs that will enrich the care and services of California’s growing aging population. The primary areas of programming will include workforce development (specifically cultivating leadership and attracting new talent to the field of aging), increasing and expanding the use of technology in all care settings and stimulating innovation in the aging field and advancing new models of service delivery.

Piedmont Gardens Names Kevin H. Smith as New Executive Director

PG Kevin H  SmithOAKLAND, Calif. –  LeadingAge California member Piedmont Gardens recently announced Kevin H. Smith as its new executive director. In his position, Smith will oversee day-to-day operations of the continuing care retirement community, including residential living, dining, health services and life enrichment programs.

“Piedmont Gardens is a well-known senior living community in the Oakland area, and I’m proud to be part of a professional team that is so excited and sincere about senior living,” said Smith. “My background is in management for large hotels, and I hope to provide the same respect and way of living for our residents as we did for our guests.”

Smith has more than 20 years of leadership experience overseeing the success of large hotels in the New York area, including the New Yorker Hotel and the Cassa Hotel and Residences, both in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. Prior to joining the executive team at Piedmont Gardens, he worked as the general manager for the Cassa Hotel under the Viceroy Hotel Group in New York.

“Kevin is a great asset to the Piedmont Gardens team and possesses the kind of leadership skills we hope to find in our executive associates,” said Jeff Glaze, senior vice president and chief operations manager at ABHOW. “He is passionate about spending quality time and interacting with residents and associates to get to know each and every one of them on a personal level.”

Smith is a graduate of Northwestern University, in Evanston, Ill., where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in anthropology. He also holds a Master of Science degree in management and systems from New York University in New York, N.Y.
